Lieutenant James David Gilkison
Oil on canvas
150 x 103cm (59 x 40 1/2in.)
Lieutenant James David Gilkison of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was the son of Dugald Stewart Gilkison, an East India tea merchant and Margaret Dunlop Gilkison (née Ralston). Gilkison served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders and was reported wounded and missing after the Battle of Le Cateau on 26th August 1914, and was assumed to have been killed in action on that date, aged 30. He is buried at Le Cateau military cemetary in northern France.
The canvas has not been lined. A (approx 4cm) abrasion and associated paint loss to the lower left corner. Horizontal stretcher marks visible along centre. Frame abrasions visible to upper and lower right edges, particularly one spot to the centre right edge. Some mimor surface dirt and some light craquelure visible in a raking light. There are a couple of surface scratches and light damage to the lowe right edge and corner. Inspection under UV reveals some areas of fluorescence but this seems to be the pigment rather than later retouching.
