Rowland Wheelwright (British 1870-1955)
Farmer leading a horse on country road;
A foal suckling from a mare in field
Both oil on board, en grisaille
Each: 115 x 69cm (45 x 28in.) (2)
Provenance: From the estate of Philippa Bradstock of Longbottom House, Biddesden
1. Man leading horse: In generally good condition. Some surface dirt including some brown staining adjacent to the tree upper left. Ultraviolet light reveals some scattered retouching to the tree and sky notably in the upper half of composition.
2. Horse and foal: In generally poorer condition than the other. Craquelure and paint shrinkage to the horses and lower foreground. Surface dirt throughout. An old (nail?) hole to the lower right corner and further 3/4 of the way down the right hand edge. There is a split to the board, approximately 8am in length running off the upper edge at the left and a further less defined split, of a similar length adjacent. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching throughout particularly to the horses and areas of paint shrinkage in the lower part of composition and to the sky and trees.
