A William and Mary olivewood oyster veneered chest on stand, circa 1690
A William and Mary olivewood oyster veneered chest on stand, circa 1690, the rectangular top with moulded edge inlaid with holly stringing depicting scroll, heart and flowerhead motifs, above two short and two long graduated drawers, the drawer and side panels strung with circular motifs, the stand with a frieze drawer above spiral turned legs and shaped stretchers above turned feet, 113cm high, 105cm wide, 61cm deep
Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use
old chips and splits, some old repairs
The stand has been later constructed and the legs and stretchers are of later date but faithfully made and coloured well to match.
The proportions of the locks vary from eachother so atleast some are later associated.
The handles are faithful to period design and may be original but the fixtures securing them atleast appear to have been later adjusted.
The escutcheons are of the period and are possibly original
The drawers have been cleaned and the interiors of the drawers have a thin layer of later varnish. The side edges of the underside of the drawers have slender fillets of timber attched in order to aid the running of the drawers.
The rear panels appear original with the possible exception of a slender panel to the centre of the rear panels (see images)
