Jansson (Jan) - Virginiæ partis australis, et Floridæ partis orientalis,
Virginiæ partis australis, et Floridæ partis orientalis,
from Le Nouveau Theatre de la Monde, the eastern seaboard of North America from Chesapeake Bay in the north east to northern Florida in the south west, containing the arms of Britain and France to indicate their regions of colonial interest at the time, with large decorative title cartouche supported by native figures, ships and compass roses, engraved map with original hand-colouring, 390 x 505mm., French text verso, a repaired split at head of central vertical fold, and a repaired marginal tear near the foot, this outside the platemark, a crease across the lower right sheet corner just affecting corner of plate but outside the border, [Burden 254], Amsterdam, 1639.
⁂ One of four very closely related maps by Blaeu and Jansson, this represents a cartographic advance over its model, the Jodocus Hondius map of 1606. Jansson's copy of this map by Blaeu, of 1638, is distinguished only by the correct numerical sequence of longitude in the lower right corner, and the numerals of latitude appearing next to the black bars in the right border.
