⁂ Hartwell de la Garde Grissell (1839-1907) Oxford convert who became a Private Chaplain and personal friend of Pope Pius IX. During his time serving in the Vatican he amassed a collection of relics and sacred curios, the most significant of which, the 'Mater Misericordia' (now 'Our Lady of Oxford'), formed the centrepiece of the collection. In 1895 he returned to Oxford and, in 1878, set up the Newman Society. After his death his collection was housed with the church of St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Oxford, however in 1971 the collection was dispersed and the relics burnt.
