bound with Giovio (Paolo, Bishop of Nocera ) Elogia Virorum bellica virtute illustrium [and Elogia Virorum literis illustrium], 2 parts, titles within woodcut architectural border, 2 woodcut portraits of the author, 128 and 62 woodcut portraits within ornate architectural borders respectively, lacking final f. of index in part 2, rather browned, [Adams G645 & G648], Basel, Petrus Perna [and Henricus Petrus], 1596-1577, together 3 works in 1 vol., contemporary vellum, rebacked in later vellum, double morocco labels to spine, head of spine worn, covers with some worming, folio.
⁂ The eleven portraits of Turkish sultans are based on a collection of portraits presented by the Turkish Admiral Barbarossa to Virginio Orsini in Marseilles, which later came into the possession of Giovio. The portrait of Mehmet II is supposed to be based on that by Gentile Bellini, which Giovio also claimed was in his own collection.
