Prayer scroll, with extracts from the Passion of Christ, various saints’ lives, parts of the Old Testament and the Gospels , in Armenian, manuscript on paper [Armenia, seventeenth century]

Long thin roll, wanting perhaps a single half-leaf at top, else complete, with a single text column (55mm. wide) throughout, that edged with thick yellow bands and including text in bolorgir script, titles in purple and red ornamental capitals in same with penwork headbands, some prayers in main text column set in diagonal shapes formed from crossing yellow bars, other compartments in this section filled with purple penwork foliage, large section with text in crisscrossing lines with flower heads set as bosses between the lines, miniatures set within roundels or within entire text column, including: the Crucifixion, two ecclesiastical saints (including a bishop), Abraham with knife in hand about to sacrifice his son Isaac, an angel with green wings, a mounted saint and an evangelist, modern Armenian notes to reverse, small holes with modern repairs (mostly affecting angel’s body), slight stains throughout and fragile joins to paper leaves now cracking and mostly held in place by aging tape, missing section with top half of a miniature, 3620 by 80mm.; in black velvet pouch

Lots marked with a delta symbol (δ) are subject to the Artist's Resale Right Law.The buyer agrees to pay Bloomsbury Auctions an amount equal to the resale royalty and we will pay such amount to the artist's collecting agent. Resale royalty applies where the Hammer price is 1,000 Euros or more and the amount cannot be more than 12,500 Euros per lot. The amount is calculated as follows:

Invoices will, as usual, be issued in Pounds Sterling. For the purposes of calculating the resale royalty the Pounds Sterling/ Euro rate of exchange will be the European Central Bank reference rate on the day of the sale.
