Theotokarion, in Coptic , decorated manuscript on paper [Coptic Egypt, fourteenth century (perhaps early in that century)]

109 leaves (plus 6 paper endleaves at front and 8 at back), each leaf a singleton or fragment of one mounted within a larger modern paper leaf, thus wanting single leaves at front and back and probably some leaves from within codex, single column of 15 lines in a good Coptic bookhand, capitals touched in red, large capitals in form of birds with lines of large ornamental capitals and simple coloured penwork headbands opening significant sections, one of these with large penwork bird, clumsy human figures and apparent devil added in pen to blank space at foot of first extant leaf, some ink burn to pages with a few with small holes (others with these holes professionally restored), spots, smudges and stains, overall fair condition, 245 by 155m.; in modern tooled goatskin binding lined with modern papyrus (by Devon Gray, Cambridge, MA.)

Provenance:
1. Most probably written and decorated in the early fourteenth century (showing no signs of Arabic influence) in one of the monasteries of the Wadi El Natran, Egypt.
2. Sam Fogg, Cat. 18: Manuscripts of the Christian East , 1996, no. 48, thence to a private collector, Boston, MA.

The Theotokarion is a collection of Theotokia , prayers to the Virgin (Theotokos in Greek), read or sung aloud during religious services. This manuscript is noteably early for a Coptic codex on the market.

Resale royalty applies where the Hammer price is 1,000 Euros or more and the amount cannot be more than 12,500 Euros per lot. The amount is calculated as follows:
