Chess
The game of chess has existed for around 1,500 years, and is now a fascinating subject for collectors interested in tracing the history of the game through the many styles and variations of chess sets, both antique and modern, that can be found from every corner of the globe. May 2004 saw the opening of Bloomsbury Auctions new Chess & Games Department under the direction of Luke Honey, a well-known figure in the Chess & Games world. Bloomsbury Auctions will be holding two Chess and Games sales each year. The department specialises in fine chess sets, including Jaques Staunton; chess ephemera and rare chess books, Backgammon boards, Mah Jong, antique and vintage board games, playing cards and gambling ephemera.
Luke was the former chess expert at Phillips de Pury & Luxembourg, and Head of Valuations at the Bonhams Bayswater branch. Luke has held highly successful chess auctions in New York and Philadelphia, and has acted as a consultant for Chess Collectors International. He is a Fine Art and Antiques Chartered Surveyor.
Vintage Fountain Pens
Vintage Fountain Pens and Pencils is a relatively new departure for Bloomsbury but we have quickly established ourselves as one of the leading auction houses for both the trade and public to buy pens. Normally, sales carry early writing implements, vintage pens, modern pens and collections of lots. Alongside the usual wide range selection of vintage pens we regularly have numbers of mint and boxed new pens that are often cheaper to buy at auction than on the high street.
Headed by Alexander Crum Ewing the department is delighted to answer any queries or undertake valuations.
