1008. After Henry Bernard Chalon To His Royal Highness the Princes of Wales and the Noblemen and Gentlemen Members of the Bibury Club this print representing the Welter Stakes on the 16th June 1801, engraving with extensive mezzotint, with hand-colouring, by Charles Turner, title in English and French below, [Siltzer p.91; Snelgrove, Chalon 3], first proof, June 4 1802, by the artist, 590 x 850mm (23 1/4 x 33 1/2 in) *** The Bibury Club had an exclusive membership of wealthy owners and held only private meetings, which moved venue from Bibury to Burford some time in the late 18th century. Due to its private nature, unlike the public events otherwise held at Burford, it is not until 1799 that the first properly recorded event is known. The Welter Stakes, shown here, was held on the first day of the 5-day meeting of 1801.Siltzer and Snelgrove both list the plate as dated August 5, presumably distinct from this one marked first proof. Condition report: Mounted to just within the image, partially obscuring first letter of artist's imprint, with very slight surface wear in upper right corner.
