14. Duncan Grant (1885-1978) Don Kneeling, charcoal heightened with white chalk, initialled and dated lower left, '49, 26 x 34cm (10 1/4 x 13 1/4 in).
Donald Robert Paul Roche (1916-2007) was a British poet, novelist, and professor of English, and a critically acclaimed translator of Greek and Latin classics. Roche was a close associate of the Bloomsbury group, and met Duncan Grant in 1946. Duncan Grant went on to live with Roche and his family until his death in 1978.
Provenance: the estate of Eardley Knollys (1902-1991), artist, dealer and critic who ran the Storran Gallery, Piccadilly, between 1938 and 1944.
