Joe Randolph "J. R." Ackerley (1896-1967) started working for the BBC in 1927, upon which he was promoted to literary editor of its weekly magazine The Listener. Ackerley was openly homosexual, a rarity for his generation, and was an influential gay right's campaigner in the 60s and 70s.
