27. Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) Portrait of HM The Queen as Princess Elizabeth charcoal and red chalk on pale grey/green paper, signed and dated 1950 lower right, 38 x 28cm (15 x 11 in).
Provenance: purchased from the artist in 1969 by the current owner's father. The drawing is accompanied with a series of letters between the buyer and the artist negotiating the sale and its safe delivery, including one from Dame Laura, dated 12th August 1969, in which she states I value the drawing of 'Princess Elizabeth', who bloomed like a flower in the field, and loved a bit of fun when occasion premitted. Also supplied is a letter from Edward Young, Deputy Private Secretary to The Queen, dated 25th February 2011, in response to a photograph of the drawing sent by the present owner to Buckingham Palace, confirming that it had been shown to Her Majesty and that she well remembered sitting for Dame Laura.
