4. Ernst Eisenmayer (b.1920) Two standing figures, bronze with brown patina, height with marble base 28cm (11 in).
Provenance: a gift from the artist to the late Dr Kurt Greenwood, 1973, thence by descent to the present owner
Dr Kurt Greenwood (1918-2002) was born in Vienna (as Kurt Gruenwald), two years before Ernst Eisenmayer, who was born in the same city. They attended the same school and both escaped the Nazi regime in 1938 to arrive in England as refugees. Their paths continued together when they were both interned on the Isle of Man, in 1940, along with around 300 others from enemy states. Their friendship continued after the war, with the Ernst occasionally presenting works to Kurt, and to his daughter Wendy, who died in 2000.
est. £800 – £1200
