Betty Swanwick was born in Forest Hill, the daughter of the artist, Henry Gerard Swanwick, who encouraged her to draw from an early age. She studied under Edward Bawden at Goldsmiths College before going on to the RCA, and then returning to teach at Goldsmiths from 1948 to 1961. She became a highly successful illustrator and poster artist, as well as painter. She was elected an RA in 1979.
