253. James Gillray (1756-1815) Consequences of a Successful French Invasion, No. I. Plate 1st, engraving after Sir John Dalrymple's description, below, [BM Satires 9180], printed in brown on 1794 watermarked wove, 1798 by the engraver, 320 x 360mm. (12 1/2 x 14 1/8 in), unframed.

est. £200 – £300

Originally intended to start a series of 20 plates to form a part of Sir John Dalrymple's propaganda campaign to illustrate text already in pamphlet form. But despite the fact he underwrote the cost to help subsidise the selling price of the 6d, instead of the usual 2 shillings, he nevertheless fell out with Gillray, who felt the price inadequate and disagreed artistically, and who terminated the project after only 4 plates, which he subsequently sold to Hannah Humphrey.
