The scarce dust-jacket, designed by Francis Cugat, played an important part in the composition of the novel itself; Fitzgerald wrote to his publisher 'For Christ's sake don't give anyone that jacket you're saving for me. I've written it into the book.' This is most evident in his description of Daisy Buchanan as the 'girl whose disembodied face floated along the dark cornices and blinding signs'.
