183. Greene (Graham) The Power and the Glory, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to title, endpapers browned, orignal cloth, corners and spine ends bumped, rubbed, dust-jacket, corners and spine ends repaired and restored, lower joint and part of spine restored, rubbed at extremities, overall a very good copy, preserved in custom drop-back box, 8vo, 1940.
The novel’s popularity in France led to it being denounced by two Catholic Bishops to Rome on two separate occasions, and in 1953 Greene was summoned by Cardinal Griffin to Westminster Cathedral, where the author was read a letter from the Holy Office demanding changes to the text.
