Baldwin's first novel, almost immediately hailed as a major treatment of black life in America, Go Tell it to the Mountain also established Baldwin as the leading black voice of his generation. Baldwin found the cover art for the proof too stereotypical and asked for it to be changed, unusually therefore the dust-jacket for the first edition is entirely different from the proof.
