An excellent copy of Dreiser's first and most important work. Accepted for publication by Doubleday, Page & Co., a subsequent reading of the manuscript by Frank Doubleday led to the publisher's attempt to abandon it on moral grounds. Contractually obliged to publish, Doubleday decided to continue but refused to promote the book; as a result only 456 copies of the first edition were sold.
