260. H. (T.) A Guide for the Child and Youth, in two parts, the first for Children containing plain and pleasant directions to read English…, the second for Youth teaching to write, cast account, and read more perfectly, two picture alphabets, each with 24 miniature woodcut illustrations, 4 engraved plates with specimens of handwriting, a few headlines and letters at outer edges shaved, some signatures cropped, one corner torn away and another repaired, slightly affecting text, contemporary blind-stamped sheep, spine repaired, new paste-downs, 16mo, J. Roberts for the Company of Stationers , 1727.

There were several editions of this work, but only five have appeared at auction, dated Edinburgh 1711, London 1723, 1725, and1753, and Aberdeen 1796. Those for 1723 and 1725 were both in the Oppenheimer collection, and were imperfect. As usual, in the present edition the same subjects are illustrated for both alphabets, with different texts, but here a different slightly larger set of blocks have been used for the second.
