Sir Arthur Vicars (1864-1921), Ulster King of Arms. Vicars suceeded Sir Bernard Burke to the office of Ulster King of Arms in 1893. In 1897 he published An Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland 1536-1810, a work of great value to genealogists after the destruction of the Public Records Office during the Irish Civil War. In 1907 the Irish Crown Jewels (insignia of Order of St. Patrick) were stolen and Vicars as custodian was held responsible. He was dismissed as Ulster in 1908. Vicars retired to Kilmorna House, near Listowel, Co. Kerry where, in 1921 he was shot by the IRA.
