20. The Annunciation, single leaf from a Book of Hours, illuminated manuscript on vellum, large miniature depicting the Virgin (with a very high forehead) kneeling by a casket, with the angel holding a scroll, in an elaborate architectural setting, with a landscape glimpsed through a window, in an arched compartment, below a large initial ‘D’ and three lines of text, all with inbard-borders of red, blue and gold surrounded by a panel border of foliage and flowers in gold and colours, verso with 14 lines of text, in a regular gothic hand, 5 initials in blue or gold, with penwork decoration in red or blue extending into the margin, line-fillers in red, blue and gold, fore-edge trimmed, just touching border, 130 x 85 mm., [ Northern France, c. 1480]
