The writer gives few clues to his identity. An inscription on front free endpaper reads: “The Gift of a sincere & much beloved Friend to F.C. Negus.” On p. 100 are “Verses on Lieutenant Cox, a brother of my good friend Mrs Goddard on losing his hat, as he was charging the French” and on p. 103, an epigram “on Lord Petre’s giving £500 towards building a new Church at Thetford on condition that Mr. Birch should be return’d member for that Borough at the next election... written by my friend Miss F.” There are also references to Cornwall, on p. 105 is a copy of an epitaph in St. German’s church Cornwall to Elizabeth wife of Jn Glanvill Esq and a letter (without author) to the Cornwall Gazette 1839, and four commercial reports including Redruth, Wadebridge and Boscastle.
