Motivated by a newspaper article on the death of a family due to poisonous gases leaking from a domestic refrigerator, Einstein discussed with Szilard the possibility of cooling via thermodynamics rather than the mechanical, piston-driven method then prevalent. These patents provide a good indication of the development of their invention.
