291. Yorkshire.- [?Burton (John, ?compiler of this volume, antiquary and physician, author of “Monasticon Eboracense”, 1710-71) Yorkshire Arms & Antiquities, manuscript notes in various hands, 509pp. (excluding blanks) including pp. of coats of arms (many in trick), genealogies etc., some tears, slightly browned, some pp. soiled and ink stained, later pencil inscription: “Collected by John Burton...”, bookplate of William Constable on front pastedown, original half calf, rubbed, joints splitting, head and tail of spine chipped, preserved in a modern cloth box, folio, 1637-40 [ & later ].

One inscription reads: “Be it knowne unto all men by these presents that Mr John Talor oneth this Book... 1637.”
A compilation of numerous copies of inquisitions, genealogies and coats of arms relating to Yorkshire families. The manuscripts include: Extracts from Crown Inquisitions; Copy of Fairfax’s roll of arms of Yorkshire by hundred or Wapentake; Copy of roll of arms of Edward Duke of York; Roll of names of men fought with Edward I in Scotland; Pedigrees of the Hungate Family; Collection of arms displayed at funerals etc.
“In 1758-9 he [Burton] published his magnum opus, Monasticon Eboracense, in which he surveyed the history of most of the monastic houses of Yorkshire monasteries and in many cases detailed their properties. The enduring importance of Burton’s history is that he calendars the charters by which the monasteries held their numerous properties; most importantly he uses over 2000 charters formerly in St Mary’s Tower in York but by then in his possession. Finally, about 1770, he succeeded in selling his collection to William Constable, of Burton Constable, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, for a lump sum said to have been £2000 and an annuity of £55... .” - Oxford DNB.
