De Rossi’s magnum opus, particularly important for his placing of scientific research and empiricism over the traditional interpretations by Talmudic scholars, much to the dismay of many of his contemporaries. The work was considered heretical and banned by the rabbinic authorities upon publication - only De Rossi’s piety spared him further direct chastisement.
