One of the first and most important French symbolist dramas and considered by the author to be his masterpiece. The piece is heavily influenced by Goethe’s Faust , the musical dramas of Richard Wagner and the theatre of Victor Hugo. Villiers De L'Isle-Adam was a close friend of the poet Stéphane Mallarmé.
