921. Short (Edward Morrieson de Courcy) Sketches made on a trip Round the World, 1887, 62 pencil drawings of scenery en route, including varous locations in the Mediterranean and Turkey; four of Alexandria and the Suez canal; six of Ceylon and Singapore; nineteen of Saigon, Hongkong, Canton, Shanghai, the Taku Forts, the City Walls and the city of Pekin, the Ming Tombs, the Great Wall and other Chinese views; five of Mount Fujihama and other scenes in Japan; the Golden Gates, San Francisco; four of the Yosemite Valley; the Niagara Falls; and the Houses of Parliament, Ottowa, inserted in an album, half roan, worn, oblong 4to; and a second album containing a loosely inserted watercolour of a Venetian canal, a pencil sketch of sailing ships, and 123 postcard views of the South of France, the Italian Lakes, and Switzerland, decorated with four small watercolours, half morcocco, joints split, 4to, [c.1910]. One of the French postcards depicts Georges Legagneaux, a leading early aviator, in his Farman biplane above the Cote d’Azur. Edward Morrieson de Courcy Short passed the Ceylon Civil Service exam in 1878, and in 1905 became Chairman of the Municipal Council and Mayor of Colombo, retiring in 1910.
