“Sept. 1939. We have been at war now for a little more than a week. One is thankful to hear official statements that we are not at war with the German People, but with the Hitler Régime. There is no martial enthusiasm of any kind, such as rose to fever point in August 1914. Everywhere you find the same attitude, that it is a grim and dreadful business that must be done to the end. The R.A.F. in France begin by dropping more than 10 million leaflets over Germany and no bombs. No wish to kill Germans, senseless to be slaughtering each other. But there can be no peace with Hitler, Goebbels, Goering, Himmler, Hess and the Gestapo.”
The Guardian sent me the New World Order by H.G. Wells - as soon as my notices had reached them. This meant intensive furious work. I sent off my notice on Friday morning, having first read it to M. who gave me the heading, Mr. Wells sees through it?”.
