57. Martineau (Harriet, journalist and writer, friend of Wordsworth, Malthus, Carlyle and others, 1802-76) Long Autograph Letter signed to R.H. Horne, 8pp. with address panel, 4to, Tynemouth, 23rd April [postmarked 1844], commenting on his new book ?A New Spirit of the Age, 1844, "To begin with my one doubt, could you not cool down a little? It seems to me that your precious feelings wd go further, penetrate the soul more, if your expressions were calmer & milder. At first, I thought there was some exaggeration, in the Preliminary Address, both as to the use in some cases, & as to the world’s want of sympathy but on reflexion, I believe you are right. A club foot, now seems to me a small matter, & the name not so very terrible (it was not to a good quiet uncle of mine) but when I remember Byron (whose whole life was ruined by it, I suppose) his wretchedness & strange succumbing to it, I suppose you have not exaggerated it”, bwoned, folds.
