Pass of Kirkstone. “On the highest part of the pass a small Inn has been erected called ‘The Travellers Rest’ and it is said to be seventy feet higher than any other habitation in England. Hay and water were here given to our horse, and a little small beer to my spouse and myself, the Coachman required something stronger.”
