These woodblock prints were produced to celebrate the first year of Chinese liberation and the founding of the PRC, originally captioned only in Chinese for domestic use but also issued with captions in three languages (Chinese, English and Russian) for export propaganda. The traditional woodblock artists adapted their craft to creating political propaganda for Chairman Mao and the Chinese Communist Party.
