Quetta is the largest city and provincial capital and district of Balochistan Province, Pakistan. It has been subjected to several major earthquakes, including the disastrous one of 1935, which killed over 40,000 people. These pictures, by the British Executive Engineer's Office, detail the effect of a nearby "earth slip" on August 3 and November 10,1892, in what was called "Mudgorge", an area of soft gypsum that became a mud swamp when it rained. This was a key railroad route to get to Quetta. The rail line was largely destroyed in a huge flood in July of 1942. Although occupied briefly by the British during the First Afghan War in 1839, it was not until 1876 that Quetta came under more permanent British control. (24)
