40. Anonymous dundee, c.1901 26 albumen prints.
Little is known about this mysterious collection of photographs although ‘Taken and Finished While You Wait’, ‘Children on a Merry-Go-Round’ and ‘Female Street Seller’ were all taken in Dundee, the Greenmarket, situated at the foot of Crichton Street and the junction of Shore Terrace. Markets were held there Fridays and Saturdays. ‘Man with Paper Sitting Beneath Lamp-Post’ and ‘Bare-Footed Boy’ were taken outside the Albert Institute in Dundee. The ‘Parade of Elephants’ could be the unusual event withnessed in Edinburgh in 1901, although the buildings in the photograph could also be in Dundee.
The photographs could be attributed to Alexander Wilson, an amateur photographer who worked from c.1870 to 1905. His glass plate negatives were bequeathed to Dundee Central Library in 1923. Other such works are held in the Dundee City Council, Central Library, Photographic Collection. (26)
