William Randolph Hearst (1863–1951), leading newspaper publisher, was a source of inspiration for the lead character in Orson Welles' classic film Citizen Kane. The inscription reads: “To Miss Alice Head / a souvenir / of our little sojourn / in Italy from her / friend and admirer / W. R. Hearst”
