458. Robert-Houdin (Jean-Eugène) A fine mystery clock, the thin glass dial with single hour hand and metal rim above the tiered bronze casing with gilt decoration, on gilt wooden plinth, the dial lettered “Robert-Houdin Paris”, 420mm. high
est. £4000 – £6000
There is no visible mechanism to turn the hand, yet the clock could keep perfect time. Robert-Houdin was the son of a clock-maker, and is considered to be the founder of modern conjuring, but is also famous for his mystery clocks. It is thought that the first one was invented and constructed in the 1830’s. A number have survived, but examples rarely appear on the market.
