Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) Pique (Rouge et Jaune) (B.908) linocut printed in red and yellow, 1959, a magnificent impression, the coloursexceptionally bright and fresh, signed in pencil,inscribed épreuves d'essai, an artist's proofaside from the edition of 50, printed by Arnéra,published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris, on Arches paper, with full margins, in goodcondition, 630 x 760 mm (24 3/4 x 30 in) Picasso once stated that if he hadn't been anartist he would have been a Picador: the fearlessmounted lancers who's job it is to wear down thebull's strength prior to the Matador dispatchingthe animal. In this wonderfully expressive linocut Picassocaptures the moment when the lance pierces thebull's neck, the swirling morass of red andyellow cleverly evoking not only the blood, sandand blazing sun of the bull ring, but also theprincipal colours of the flag of Picasso'sbeloved Spain, the home of the bull fight.
