an attractive set of the third octavo edition of audubon's masterpiece and the first of the lockwood reissues. The octavo edition was first published in parts from 1840-1844, and there followed eight subsequent editions (the last appearing in 1889). The plates of the second and all subsequent editions can be distinguished from the first by the printed backgrounds which indicate the use of tint stones prior to the hand-coloring.
