Joyce Carol Oates was the winner of the 1970 National Book Award for her novel Them and the winner of the 1996 PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Art of the Short Story. She has also been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for her novels Black Water (1992), What I Lived For (1994), and Blonde (2000).
Oates inscribed the portrait "The candle is not there to illuminate itself".
